Amidst the capering, there is much talk on the nature of language and its inability to reflect reality. Jake’s misadventures along the way have the air of a cerebral Ealing comedy caper, or an intellectual Noman Wisdom film. He then goes off looking for someone else, or for the person he was looking for earlier. The plot is driven mainly by Jake trying to find people. The central character of this book, Jake Donaghue, is a penniless writer wandering around 1950s London.
I wonder how far this authorial control chokes the life out of these books, but gives way to depths of human vitality in what emerged some years later
Rather like 'A Severed Head', which I also arrived at only recently, it is a tightly structured book with clear objectives. I wonder how much this has to do with the major changes in human society and values that have taken place since this book was first published in 1954. In part, it is the social world in which the characters move that is repellent. His frenzied pursuit of Anna is not presented in a way that even begins to engage our feelings, and his transformation into a writer of quality is equally unconvincing. He is, of course, not meant to be a hero, but I think that he is intended to have a certain facile charm. Jake Donaghue, the central character, is odious. For me, anyway, it is hard to imagine that this is the novelist who was to give us such fine novels as 'The Nice and the Good', 'The Sea, The Sea' and others. I came to Iris Murdoch's first novel very late, many years after reading the major novels of her middle period.
